Janet Hipfner

Board Chair

Janet was born and raised in Dryden, Ontario. She lived for a short time in British Columbia, but returned home to raise her own family in Northwestern Ontario, spending 32 years in Ignace. Janet is a helper by nature and spent most of her career as a Paramedic. Starting out as an Emergency Medical Attendant then later completing her College Diploma in paramedicine to become an Advanced Emergency Medical Care Attendant. She worked for Superior North EMS and Kenora District Services Board as a paramedic in Ignace, Dryden, Ear Falls, Upsala and Shuniah. As a paramedic, Janet developed the skills required to remain calm in confident in stressful and dangerous situations. Throughout her paramedic career, she has shown a great deal of empathy towards all those she has encountered and this is something she continues to exude in her daily life and interactions with others.

Janet loves everything Northwestern Ontario has to offer and has enjoyed the outdoors, spending much of her life on the lakes fishing, camping and hiking through the vast wilderness, beautiful Provincial Parks and other untouched spaces of the area she has always called home.

In between her career as a Paramedic, Janet then took on the role of firefighter for the Ministry of Natural Resources for six summers. She was respected in the role and at one time was the oldest female firefighter in Northwestern Ontario, which also speaks to her strength as a strong leader and shows her dedication to her community.

Janet spent approximately six years in the role of Community Support Service Coordinator for the Métis Nation of Ontario. She has been serving on the Northwest Métis Council in Dryden in different roles for nearly three years. She also has previous board experience through the Mary Berglund Community Health Centre. Janet believes that all people need help at some point in their life. Through strong advocacy and decision making, she wants to assist Northwestern Ontario Métis Child & Family Services in delivering services for our Citizens in a way that respects our history, traditions and values while strengthening families and ensuring children are able to remain at home with their families.
